The children named her in July 1991, after the character Jessica from the film Who Framed Roger Rabbit. In her memory, the cat shelter was also named after her.
How It All Began
In 2000, the Help Animals Association opened the “Riska” shelter for dogs and cats. That year, 430 dogs and 16 cats were taken into the shelter.
As the number of animals increased, the space designated for cats became insufficient. For this reason, in 2005, Zlata Korjenic decided to completely separate the cats from the dogs. She converted approximately 200 square meters of space inside her home into accommodation for the cats, along with an enclosed outdoor area of the same size.
In January 2013, the Help Animals Association donated the dog shelter premises and the dogs to the “Nada za životinje — Riska” Association, allowing Help Animals to focus its activities entirely on the protection of cats. Shelter Jessica is registered in the Register of Facilities for Keeping Animals maintained by the Veterinary Directorate of the Republic of Serbia.
Its work and continued existence are made possible primarily through donations from citizens who recognize the difficult situation faced by abandoned cats.
